Grammy award winning EDM DJ and producer, Zedd, recently debuted a short documentary titled Moment Of Clarity. The half hour long film follows Zedd as he embarks on his Moment Of Clarity Tour in order to promote his commercially successful debut studio album Clarity which was released in October 2012. The documentary is scheduled to air today on American cable channel Palladia at 22:00hrs. However, it has also been released in advance online via Vevo and can be viewed on YouTube. Several popular DJs and musicians make appearances in the film including DeadMau5, Skrillex, Dillon Francis, and Hayley Williams from the rock group Paramore.
The film starts off with a clip of Zedd winning the Grammy Award for his single Clarity in the Best Dance Recording category. We then see Zedd helping to setup one of the tour venues for his performance which is running late due to various difficulties. Throughout the film we hear different things concerning the musician’s background and the making of the album. We get to learn that Skrillex is one of the guys who helped to get him noticed. Zedd sent some music to Skrillex via email which impressed Skrillex and the rest as they say is history. We also learn that Zedd sent a demo of Stay The Night to Hayley Williams via mail. She was impressed with the song and that resulted in the collaboration between the two artists. The moment when you see Zedd in the process of recording the hit single Stay The Night with Hayley Williams is one of the most engaging throughout the film. Hayley confesses that although she’s not very knowledgeable about EDM she has developed a sense of respect for the genre after seeing all the work that’s put into the music.
During the course of the film we also get to learn that the 24 year old Zedd started making music at the age of 4 and joined a band at the age of 12, so he has a long history within the music industry. Another particularly interesting story we hear in the documentary is how Zedd got signed to Interscope Records. The young Zedd met Lady Gaga and played 60 seconds of one of his tracks for her. She loved it so much that she called the co-founder of Interscope Records, Jimmy Iovine, to tell him to sign the up and coming producer. Later on Zedd got to produce some songs from Gaga’s third studio album Artpop. In the film Jimmy Iovine comments that when he initially heard Zedd’s music he just wanted everyone else to hear it because the guys was that good. “I felt when I first heard Zedd, I related to him as a record producer. I loved his song sense and his chord sense. But the thing I liked the most was his aggressiveness, sonically.” Iovine says.
The film really gives us a peek into some of what goes on behind the scenes when creating a dance music record and an accompanying show. We get a glimpse of the relationships that Zedd has with his team, especially with his managers Dave Rene and Tim Smith. More importantly it tells us the story of how a young boy has grown up to realize his potential as a musician and has become one of the most sought after EDM producers. This is a film that most EDM musicians and fans will probably enjoy because it shows a different side of a star we hear about and see on TV.
Releasing this film at the close of 2014 is the perfect way for Zedd to cap off what has been a tremendous year for him. The documentary is directed by Justin Nizer.
