Grammy nominated DJ/music producer/songwriter Diplo recently announced that Major Lazer will release 2 albums in 2015. He along with fellow DJs Walshy Fire and Jillionaire were in India on tour when the announcement was made during an interview with Radio and Music. Diplo had previously revealed that Major Lazer will release new material in the near future during an interview with In The Mix. However, the real surprise came when it was announced that there will be two separate albums. The first is scheduled for release in February 2015, and the second is scheduled for release in September 2015. The mixing and mastering of the first album is already complete which means the new music might be featured in the group’s annual Kingston, Jamaica show on the 19th of December 2014. Each of the projects will consist of 8 tracks.
The practice of releasing multiple albums in a single year is becoming more and more common these days as several renowned artists outside of the EDM scene have already done that this year, including rappers Rick Ross, Gucci Mane and E-40.
Gwen Stefani and Ellie Goulding are expected to feature on the albums whose tracklists are yet to be released. Based on Diplo’s track record of collaborating with people from practically all genres known to man, it’s likely that these next 2 albums will be no different, which should result in an eclectic sound. The two albums will mark the third and fourth official, full-length studio albums from the group following 2009’s Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do and 2013’s Free The Universe. Free The Universe in particular was a commercial success and charted in multiple countries.
During the interview with Radio and Music Diplo, who has collaborated with Skrillex quite a lot said “We have been working together for a while now. We have been working on many tacks, so you will see us collaborate on more projects. Our collaborative tracks will be released next year.” This confirms the Tweet that Diplo sent out earlier which hinted at a Jack U album in the works. No official announcement concerning that particular project has been made yet.
Major Lazer was also recently in Australia on the Stereosonic Tour where they performed a set alongside Skrillex, What So Not, and RL Grime. Apart from music the group is working on an animated series which will be out in 2015. The show will air on Fox and will be about a “Rasta superhero”. It will begin to air shortly after the first of the two albums is released and it will feature music from the group’s catalogue. It looks like Diplo and Major Lazer as a collective have a very busy year ahead of them. You can listen to their recently released collaboration with Ariana Grande in the YouTube video below.
