V-Moda Crossfade M-100 Review

V0-Moda M-100 Headphones

High quality and great sound

There is a lot of competition these days among high quality headphones, and the V-Moda Crossfade M-100 is a worthy addition to an already tough crowd. Billed as the world’s first crowdsourced headphones, the M-100s were developed with the input and assistance of a group of editors, Grammy-winning, artists, DJs, travelers and audiophiles. The result of this collaboration is a sound quality that appeals to virtually everybody.
The M-100s don’t just have great sound, but also have superior design, build quality and durability. At this end of the quality spectrum, you are definitely getting what you pay for. If you read the customer reviews on some of the popular retail sites, you’ll see that one of the highest rated attributes is the quality of the bass. Good bass is a hallmark of V-Moda’s products, but it is important to note that the great bass does not mean that the rest of the audio spectrum is lacking in any way.
Classical music is rendered crystal clear, and an acoustical guitar sounds incredibly lifelike. The 50mm dual diaphragm driver has inner and outer rings to separate the bass from bleeding into mid and high ranges, resulting in very clear and vivid sound. Although the M-100s certainly have their strengths, these are extremely well rounded headphones. The Crossfade M-100s are made to be used and enjoyed on the go, and the sound you don’t hear is as important as the sound you do. Analog noise isolation has been engineered to naturally suppress external sounds like jet engines and crying babies.
The memory foam cushions mould themselves to the ears forming a tight seal, cutting down on external noises further. The ergonomic headband and hexagonal shape reduces the force on the ears and head, increasing the comfort. At only 280 grams, the M-100s are relatively lightweight for a full size set of headphones.Considerable thought and planning went into the design and construction, resulting in headphones that look good and wear well. V-Moda says that the headphones are tested beyond military grade MIL-STD-810G test standards. It’s not quite clear what that standard is, but it’s plain to see that these are some very rugged headphones.
The construction is steel, not plastic, and made to withstand a 6 foot drop to a concrete floor more than 70 times. The steel headband can be bent more than 10 times and still return to its original shape. The cables are reinforced with kevlar. If the Special Forces ever need headphones, the M-100s would have to be at the top of their short list.

The most impressive aspect of the design has to be the ability to fit the M-100s into the extremely small exoskeleton case. V-Moda’s unique CliqFold hinge allows the headphones to be folded into a case that is little more than the size of two ear covers put together. For a pair of full sized over the ear headphones, that is some seriously impressive engineering. Oh yes… The cables, 1/4 inch adapter and a USB flash drive will also fit into the case, which can be attached to anything with the included carabiner clip.

The Crossfade M-100 has two inputs built in, and comes with two cables included. The SharePlay audio cable lets a friend plug into the V-Moda cable and listen at the same time. The SpeakEasy mike cable works with all smartphones and tablets. It has a one button remote, and a microphone that is optimized for voice recognition and calls in any environment. There are tiny corks included to keep dust and dirt out of the extra inputs when not in use. Optional cables are available for gaming and Skype, as is a locking coiled cable for musicians.

Three hundred bucks is at the upper range for what you can pay for a set of very high quality headphones, and there is a fair bit of competition in this space. Taking all of the factors into account – sound, design, quality, durability – these headphones represent the best value for this kind of money. 15 editors’ choice awards have said exactly the same thing. The V-Moda Crossfade M-100s are not cheap, but they will provide a lifetime of audio listening pleasure.
